Every time Facebook tries to act like Twitter, and Twitter tries to act like Facebook, I get a little irritated. Sure, the all-in-one aspect is great, but what is up with everyone ripping each other off?
Facebook recently added Places, giving users the ability to post where they're located. Today, Facebook announced Deals, rewarding users with offers and coupons when they check in at different places. Sound familiar? It will if you've ever used FourSquare. I prefer Facebook to remain Facebook, and FourSquare to remain FourSquare, or for them to team up somehow. But if it involves a deal, I may have to jump the shark.
Oops! I think I already did. GAP is giving away free pairs of jeans to the first 10,000 customers who check in using Facebook Places at the GAP this Friday, November 5. [Insert jokes about the defunct logo here.] A coupon for one pair of men's or women's 1969 premium jeans, up to $59.50 in value, will be given to the first guests who check in. Each store will have a limited amount of coupons to give away. Those who arrive too late will receive a coupon for 40% off any regular priced item…not the worst consolation prize.
I don't know about you, but I'll be sneaking out for an early lunch on Friday. Facebook Places, here I come.
For more information on Facebook Places and Facebook Deals, including how to use it from your mobile phone, visit facebook.com/places.
UPDATE: I just checked in for my free pair of jeans! It was easy as pie, only a few customers were in lline, but I'm sure that varies by location. The coupon is only valid today, so get moving!
