Almost every year there's a craze for one toy with more demand than supply, forcing parents across the country to scramble to find it. When I was a kid, the craze was Cabbage Patch Kids. My mom has a story about her frantic search for one, finally meeting a store clerk who whispered a time to meet in the back parking lot to make her purchase. Who cares if it was legal or not, it was a Cabbage Patch Kid! Later came Tickle Me Elmo, and now this year's sensation, Zhu Zhu Pets.
Ah, Zhu Zhu pets, funny little stuffed hamsters that zoom around just like the real ones, thanks to a set of AAA batteries. The thought might seem odd, and the gray and brown ones a bit too realistic, but kids adore them. Or, so us adults have been told. One of the best things about Zhu Zhus? They're inexpensive, as long as you don't get too caught up in the accessories. It costs $9.99 for one Zhu Zhu, that is, if you can actually find one. And don't bother shopping at Amazon where they're double price, or eBay, where they could easily sell for triple.
So, where should you go?
Target received shipments up until this weekend, mostly accessories, which they've been sporadically putting on shelves. They supposedly won't be receiving any more, but it's best to keep calling and checking your local stores to find out what they have. Every once in a while, a clerk will look and suddenly find a box in the back, not sure how that happens, but it does. And remember, if one employee says no ask another! It worked for me.
The jackpot this weekend has been Toys R Us, with a limited selection of Zhu Zhu pets each morning at 6am. On Friday, there were 50 single packs, Saturday had 4-packs, and more of both are expected on Sunday. Signs and ads say it's limited to 1 per household, but when I asked for 2, they gladly obliged. Hey, it's worth a try! And here's an interesting development, I just found a press release announcing shipments of millions of Zhu Zhu pets to stores daily from Sunday through Christmas Eve. As always, check with your local store first. My local store told me Sunday is the last day, but chances are that may not be the case.
Update: A reader just scooped that limited supplies of Zhu Zhu Pets are now available a Toysrus.com. To see what's in stock at any given time, click HERE >> (Thanks, Christie!)
Then there's Walmart. Not only will Walmart have Zhu Zhu pets Monday, December 21 through Wednesday, December 23, they're offering them for only $8! Of course, you'll have to line up at 7am, and each store is limited to only 20 to 60 per store. Knowing Walmart, this could be a potential nightmare. But, these are Zhu Zhu Pets we're talking about. I went to my local Toys R Us this morning where they raised the limit to 4 per person, and had 400 in stock. The manager said there would be 40 going on the shelves each remaining day until Christmas. They had more of the 4-packs as well. Things are lightening up out there, but keep in mind that each store could be different. Happy hunting!
